YOURspace Pods Installed in Indiana Tech’s Library

TLDR: Indiana Tech partnered with YOURspace to install modular study pods in its library through a 90-day trial. Due to high student demand, the university expanded the program to include both collaborative and individual pods. These flexible, ADA-compliant spaces install in hours, not months, offering a cost-effective alternative to traditional construction while supporting enrollment, retention, and evolving campus needs.

At a Glance:

  • Indiana Tech successfully implemented modular study pods to create flexible, private spaces within its existing library footprint.
  • The university began with a 90-day trial and expanded its investment after strong student and faculty adoption.
  • Modular library study pods can be installed quickly and reconfigured easily, making them a scalable alternative to traditional construction.
  • YOURspace’s thoughtfully designed study environments enhance student experience, helping institutions support enrollment, retention, and evolving academic needs.

Sometimes great opportunities arise spontaneously. In this case, spontaneity resulted in innovative study pods for a university library.

At a Habitat for Humanity event, leaders from YOURspace connected with the president of Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne, Indiana. That conversation sparked a partnership that transformed modular pods (originally developed during the 2020 pandemic) into a long-term privacy and productivity solution for McMillen Library.

What began as a short-term trial quickly became a scalable strategy for modern library spaces.

Study Pods Implemented at Indiana Tech

YOURspace study pods were first designed as customizable, modular rooms to address urgent needs for private workspaces. As campuses reopened, those same pods proved ideal for libraries looking to balance collaboration with quiet study.

Indiana Tech implemented the pods through a 90-day rental program to measure student demand and usability. The initial installation included two collaborative rooms measuring 10’ x 11’ and 10’ x 12’.

Student and staff response was immediate. The spaces were consistently used for group projects, focused study sessions, and faculty meetings, validating the long-term need for adaptable library study pods.

Customization for Library Spaces

The design of the pods was a collaborative effort between the library director and facilities director to ensure they complemented the existing environment.

The larger pods featured:

  • Round desks accommodating 4–5 people
  • Whiteboards for brainstorming and note-taking
  • Glass walls at the front and back to preserve natural light
  • Sound dampening for reduced distraction
  • Dimmable LED lighting
  • Built-in outlet/power walls

To comply with fire marshal requirements, YOURspace incorporated a drop-down ceiling system, demonstrating how modular solutions can meet regulatory standards while maintaining flexibility.

Manufactured in the U.S. and available in eight standard size options, a YOURspace study pod can be installed in under three hours. Even more importantly, pods can be upgraded, downsized, or relocated to a different room as campus needs evolve.

Success of the Library Pods

Following the success of the collaborative rooms, Indiana Tech expanded its investment by adding two individual pods measuring 4’ x 4’.

These compact library pod units include:

  • Half-window panels
  • A dedicated desk and shelving
  • Electrical outlets for device charging
  • A private, distraction-reduced environment

The result is a layered library experience at Indiana Tech: collaborative rooms for group work and enclosed spaces for independent focus,  all without permanent construction.

Benefits of the YOURspace Study Pods

The impact at Indiana Tech has been clear. Students use the pods for small group work and solo study, while faculty rely on them for meetings, interviews, and planning sessions.

YOURspace study pods for libraries are:

  • Modular and reconfigurable
  • Quick to install with minimal disruption
  • Cost-effective compared to traditional builds
  • ADA compliant
  • Designed with sound dampening for privacy
  • Customizable inside and out

Think of each pod as an upgraded, modern study carrel, but one that can evolve with your institution.

Instead of committing to permanent walls, universities gain adaptable infrastructure that supports changing enrollment trends, learning styles, and technology needs.

Why Your Higher Ed Institution Needs Library Study Rooms

Today’s students expect quiet, tech-enabled spaces that support both collaboration and concentration. Open libraries alone no longer meet every academic need.

Strategically implemented study pods library layouts allow institutions to:

  • Maximize underutilized square footage
  • Create privacy without blocking natural light
  • Offer flexible room sizes for different group needs
  • Support virtual learning and online exams
  • Enhance campus tours and prospective student impressions

By incorporating modular library study pods, institutions can address immediate facility gaps while maintaining long-term flexibility.

How Study Pods Address Enrollment, Retention, and Facility Gaps

Modern campus environments influence student decision-making. When prospective students tour a campus, they notice thoughtfully designed spaces.

Flexible study pods demonstrate an institution’s commitment to student success by offering quiet, focused areas that support productivity and well-being. They also help campuses respond quickly to enrollment growth or shifting academic demands without waiting years for capital construction projects.

Why Modular Library Pods Are Better Than Construction

Library Pods

Traditional construction can take months and disrupt campus operations with noise, dust, and restricted access.

In contrast, modular study pods can be installed in just a few hours. The clean installation process minimizes disruption to students and faculty while preserving daily library operations.

Beyond installation speed, permanent builds lack adaptability. Once walls are up, layouts are fixed. Modular pods can be relocated, resized, or reconfigured as institutional needs shift, whether that means converting collaborative rooms into individual booths or expanding pod footprints for larger groups.

Cost is another major factor. Permanent construction requires significant investment in materials, labor, and permits. Modular pods provide a lower initial investment (starting at $5,800) and reduce indirect costs tied to lost productivity or extended project timelines.

In some cases, pods may even qualify as movable “school furniture,” potentially opening access to classroom or infrastructure grants.
